Sheet masking 101

Hello my loves!

Today we are going to discuss sheet masks. What they are, the different kind, the purposes they serve. While many of my readers are probably very familiar with them, I’ve had quite a few people around me ask “what’s up with your sheet mask obsession?”

So, sheet masks are generally some sort of disposable mask that you leave on your face anywhere from 10-60 minutes. Usually, they do not need to be washed off after and you just massage the remaining product into your skin. There are a few types designed to cleanse your skin that do need to be washed off after.

They were first widely popular in Asian skincare, but they’re starting to trickle over to the US/Europe in stores such as Ulta, Sephora, Urban Outfitters and as seen in my last post, even at

For the most part, these masks are super simple. You just throw on one, relax and afterwards your face is moisturized…just like that. They’re great to do before bed since you don’t need to rinse afterwards. They’re great for the airplane if you’ve got no shame because they keep your skin hydrated in that dry and stuffy environment.

Depending on the mask, I would recommend staying seated and just relaxing while it’s on, as much don’t adhere well when you’re up and about. There are some sheet mask covers on the market, which you place over the sheet mask and those make it easier to sheet mask while you move, as well as prolong the mask from drying out.

Now, in terms of flavors/scents whatever you want to call it, there’s a billion options. Literally everyday I am stumbling across something new. Some of the more common ones include:

  • Honey
  • Tea tree
  • Aloe
  • Green tea
  • Citrus
  • Ginseng
  • Coconut
  • Shea butter
  • Snail
  • Pomegrante

The list goes on and on.

As for types of sheetmasks, there’s a lot of variety in that as well:

  • Cotton, which is usually the most typical kind
  • Hydrogel
  • Kelp
  • Silk
  • Tencel
  • Pulp
  • Bio Cellulose

And that list goes on as well.

Sheet masks have a variety of different results, depending what you are looking for. Some options include

  • Anti-aging
  • Soothing (for irritated skin/skin exposed to sun damage)
  • Acne care/pore care
  • Moisturizing
  • Brightening

There’s no set amount of time that you have to use them, I try to use one everyday and have done them twice in a day but that’s because I’m #0bsessed. Some people I know do they once a week, once in awhile..either way when you do them you’ll see your skin is hydrated and moisturized, although I do feel if you’re looking for long term effects, it’s best to make them a part of your skincare regiment.

Price wise, you can find some sheet masks for $1, and I’ve seen some pricey masks at about $20 per mask. Being the Boston Bargainista, I will recommend some affordable options down below.

Do you have a favorite sheet mask? If so, leave a comment and tell me which!

  1. Have you ever fallen asleep who them on? As a mom, I can’t even count the tomes I’ve accidentally fell asleep for the night thinking I’d take the mask in a half hour. 😁
